Bolted Joints in Tension

Wed, Feb 5, 2020 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM CST

Presenter: Mike Busch

Threaded fasteners (bolts, screws, and studs) loaded in tension are used to hold cylinders onto crankcases, connecting rods onto crankshafts, and Bonanza wings onto the fuselage. Such bolted joints are so ubiquitous that we take them for granted, but we shouldn't. Owners and mechanics often don't appreciate just how crucial it is for these fasteners to be tightened properly, and why. Maintenance expert Mike Busch explains why "preload" of these fasteners is all-important, and why using a torque wrench may not be the best way to achieve it. Qualifies for FAA WINGS and AMT credit.
